The Famous Traditional Goan Mackerel Fish Curry

I have visited many Goan restaurants outside Goa,but i have never found proper goan curry served there. They make many changes to the recipe and serve the public. So i am giving you the original goan fish curry recipe, which is cooked in every goan household. Know as Bangdo curry,

  • 4 Mackerel nicely cleaned and cut
  • Half Coconut grated
  • 1/2 tspn Turmeric Powder
  • 10 to 15 no. black pepper
  • 1 tblspn Coriander seed
  • 15 dry red chilis
  • 2 Green chilis
  • Small piece of Ginger
  • 4 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 tblspn Dry Tamarind
  • 7 no. Sichuan pepper (Teppal)
  • 1/2 tspn Vigna mungo (urad dal)
  • 1/4 tspn Fenugreek seed (Methi)
  • Salt as per taste

First marinate the mackerel with salt and keep it aside. Now take grated coconut, turmeric powder, black pepper, coriander seeds ,ginger, garlic clove and dry red chillis and add all this to a grinder mixer and grind it to a fine, thick paste. This paste is the most important part of the dish as it is the base of it. Now keep the paste a side.

Take an utensil and start heating it, add tspn oil in it and once it heats up a little add fenugreek and vigna mungo and give it a little stir till it becomes golden brown. You need to work your hands little fast now, add the paste to it and add half glass water( you can add more water if you want the curry little liquidy and not thick). Quickly add the mackerel, cut green chili, tamarind and sichuan pepper. Add salt as per taste. Now let it boil for 10 min . It is ready to be served hot with rice.
